>> barack obama he and hiss choice would haven't the debate. after all today's polls are up nine points in ohio. it looks like these debates are just the rapids the president has to go through. if he didn't have them, it would be fair sailing. so for mitt romney, these debates are essential. he's going to have to show that he's presidential. so far when he went to the olympic and maybe gaffed and he stumbled with that 44%. they're not sure they can live with the guy for four years so mitt romney has to really be the one that comes out the winner. he's got to score. >> there was a time between the famous kennedy-nixon tapes that there were no televised debates. why are they considered so vital now? >> well, the kennedy-nixon debates created so much attention in 1960. many people think that's why ted kennedy won. if you recall ford made famously the gap that -- and then certainly by 1980, ronald reagan was very behind in the polls was just able to tidal wave over jimmy carter with quips like there you go again in a sort of staged format. since 19

when you look at when things started to move for obama, it was during the debates. specifically he made the case then right or wrong that he was a better steward of the economy than john mccain in troubled times. romney's got to make that case in 2012. >> little different when you're running against an incumbent. right? there's not a direct parallel there. >> look at the transcript. he was running against president bush. that these set of economic policies are wrong and i have a compelling vision. whether he can do that is another story. >> your colleague e.j. deion wrote journalists are in search of defining moments and game changers. by this standard, romney needs to game changer. obama can live quite happily without one. so do you think that mitt romney needs to have a big moment or if he is perceived to have won will at least give republicans some momentum. is that really the most reasonable thing to hope for? >> well, certainly it will. if the race were sort of fixed in time right now, everybody assumes that obama would win. in many ways that's happening becaus

most people will go into these debates, if you like obama, you will think he did a debate job. romney has said that he wants to use the debates as a clarifying moment. he thinks the democrats have waged an inaccurate campaign. he has said he expects obama to tell more untruths on the debate stage but he thinks there is a real opportunity for him. there is congratulations from the romney campaign, what a great debater obama is and in some ways they are mediocre debaters. there have been some mistakes. obama is likeable enough moment with hillary clinton. gwen: think of the debates you have covered, chuck -- >> because i'm old. [laughter] gwen: which once would you say have made a difference in the outcome? >> well, i'm not actually this old -- [laughter] >> clearly when gerald ford said that the poland not under soviet domination that was one of his memorable type of gaffes and the big putdown from lloyd bentsten and dan quayle. they don't have a moment where they say that guy is clearly better than the other guy. they are both well prepared. these are smart people. and not like

speaking of zingers, donald trump advises on twitter, in debate mitt romney should ask obama why auto by fri states born in kenya, raised in indonesia. i think that's a great idea, don't you? he's already got his birther joke handy. why not go straight for the birthers. >> his facts are as accurate as the republican facts have been. that was never said in obama's autobiography. it was a silly thing that a publicity agent had made years before. but just to pick up on karen's point for a second, i think she's onto something. you don't come to a gun fight with a butter knife. that's effectively what romney is doing. debates are about, guess what, debates. that means you come with facts and ideas. and it's hard for me to understand what exactly romney is coming to this debate with. >> 20% across the board tax cut. >> right. which has to mean a tax increase for the middle class. it's the only way to pay for it if you want it to be revenue neutral. he can't make the argument about the economy because as we've said, he'll try to make the argument that obama has been an infective steward. we'
